Augments Program
Scholarship for Undergraduate and Graduate Study in the Geosciences
A partnership between UT Arlington, UT Brownsville, and UT Pan American
The University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at Brownsville and the University of Texas Pan American have created AUGMENTS, a program that offers exciting opportunities and financial support to students studying in the physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, geology, and environmental science. This program helps undergraduate students complete their undergraduate studies while learning geosciences concepts and research skills that will prepare them to succeed in graduate school and join the scientific geosciences workforce.
With generous funding provided by an S-STEM grant from the National Science Foundation, participating students enrolled at UT Arlington, UT Brownsville or UT Pan American can obtain need and merit-based scholarships to help them complete their undergraduate studies and continue on to earn a master’s degree. The program will provide need based support during the participants’ final two semester of undergraduate study. Further, AUGMENTS students will have the opportunity to receive two years of additional AUGMENTS support to pursue a master’s degree in Geology or Environmental Science at UT Arlington.
If you are a Sophomore, Junior or Senior studying geosciences or related physical sciences or engineering, you should consider participating. Why?
- Get to know professors and get personal attention and support
- Obtain first-rate academic and professional support that will help you grow, learn and prepare for the next stage in your career
- Develop friendships with people who share your interests that will start now and continue as you pursue your career goals
- Prepare you to complete a Master’s degree in Geology or Environmental Science that will open new and exciting career opportunities
- Gain confidence that you are prepared to go to graduate school and will succeed
- Obtain a scholarship that will support you while studying and doing geoscience research in a field camp and earning credits that will satisfy requirements for your degree
- Obtain a scholarship that will support you during your final two semesters (Senior year) of undergraduate studies
- Obtain a two-year scholarship that will support you while you finish a Master’s degree in Geology or Environmental Science at UT Arlington
- Join a community of students, scholars and professionals that will help you make a difference that matters to you
Scholarships for participation in a 6-week for credit research field camp held each Summer in New Mexico are available to qualified Junior/Senior level students. The field camp allows groups of students to earn credit while exploring advanced concepts and conducting hands-on research and field work under the guidance of our outstanding faculty. Food and housing during the field camp is provided. These need-based scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to strong students majoring in geosciences or related disciplines who have a passion for learning and research.
Students earning a B or better in the field camp course who are interested in a professional career in the geosciences are eligible to apply for a need-based scholarship that will help support them during their final year (two semesters) of undergraduate study. Upon completion of their undergraduate degrees and admission to graduate programs in Geology or Environmental Science at UT Arlington, students will also be eligible to receive two years of need-based scholarship support while they complete their Master’s degrees.
Participation in this program will not delay completing an undergraduate degree. Credit earned in the field camp will satisfy undergraduate degree requirements. Participation will also reduce the time and cost of going to graduate school. Students will be prepared through faculty guidance and support, prior coursework, research experiences and supplemental workshops and seminars to meet graduate degree requirements rapidly and successfully. Qualified students will also receive 6-hours of credit toward their Master’s degrees in Geology or Environmental Science at the UT Arlington if they earn a B or better in the field camp, reducing the number of credit hours that they have to complete at UT Arlington to earn their degrees.
Applications from students nominated by a faculty member familiar with the students’ talents in geosciences or related disciplines in the physical sciences and engineering are welcome. Applicants should have a 3.0 average in courses completed in the geosciences or related disciplines and demonstrate financial need on the FAFSA. Women, African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans are especially encouraged to apply. All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
