Utley Graduate Fellowship
1st year Doctoral candidate in the School of Social Work receives Utley Fellowship and is able to pursue studies full-time.
Cara Wallace, a UT Arlington Master’s alumni, is a returning student who received a 2011-12 Bob and Ann Utley Graduate Fellowship. Without the Utley Fellowship and an Enhanced Graduate Teaching (EGTA) Fellowship that includes full-tuition and comes with a competitive graduate teaching assistantship, Cara states she would not have been able to put work aside to go to school full-time.
“I thought I would be working a significant amount of time, in addition to being a student, mom and wife. How [my family was] going to manage [with me going back to school] was in question.”
As a recipient of the Bob and Ann Utley Graduate Fellowship, Cara receives an annual award of $2,000 for one year.
Having received the Utley Fellowship and EGTA support, Cara, who previously worked full-time for Community Hospice of Texas, providing hospice care for five years, is pursuing ways she may be able to give back to future social workers. “I’ve always known I wanted to get a PhD. My parents are educators. I want to educate and develop new ways of approaching topics that are dear to me that benefit us all.”
